I've never liked background and layout design. They never agreed with me. I'm not a details person and most backgrounds require details.
That's why I force myself to do the background every Tuesday. It is my blog, I could change it if I wanted. But forcing yourself to hone your skills on something you hate doing (but is related to what you want to do) will improve you more than it would if you just ignored it.
